The American naval force made a second round of attacks against Houthi-controlled facilities and regions in Yemen on Saturday. It occurred one day after Washington and London conducted several airstrikes on the Houthis, believing it to be endangering commercial ships in the Red Sea.
One powerful blast was heard by media reporters in Yemeni capital, Sanaa.
The Navy destroyer USS Carney used Tomahawk ground assault missiles to carry out the “follow-on action” on a Houthi radar post in the early hours of Saturday in Yemen, according to U.S. Military.
A day earlier, the first round of attacks, 28 sites and over 60 targets were targeted. On Friday, US President Joe Biden issued a warning that the Houthi forces would be subject to more strikes.
Following the first wave of airstrikes yesterday, the U.S. Navy issued a 72-hour warning to American-flagged boats to avoid regions near Yemen in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. This warning preceded the current attack. The alert was given as the Houthis in Yemen threatened severe reprisals, increasing the likelihood of more fighting in an area already troubled by Israeli assault in Gaza.
Officials from the US administration and the US army stated that they anticipated a counterattack from the Houthis. At least five individuals were killed and six injured by the US-led strike, which was carried out in retaliation for a recent series of drone and missile strikes on commercial ships in the strategically important Red Sea.
According to the United States, the two rounds of attacks targeted 28 distinct sites spread throughout Yemeni regions under Houthi control.
“We will make sure that we respond to the Houthis if they continue this outrageous behavior along with our allies,” Biden told media while in his stay in Emmaus, Pennsylvania.
Biden Response
When asked if he thought the Houthis were a terrorist organization, Biden said, he thinks yes. Afterwards, at a trip in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the Biden spoke with reporters and declared that it did not matter if the Houthis were reclassified as such.
Additionally, Biden reacted against certain lawmakers—from both parties—who stated he must have waited for legislative approval before executing the strikes; “They’re wrong, and I sent up this morning when the strikes occurred exactly what happened.”
The US defense office claimed the Secretary Lloyd Austin authorized the military mission from the hospital. Austin is recuperating from post-prostate cancer surgery problems.
When the Houthis started attacking civilian boats in November, the US government said that it was thinking about classifying them as terrorists. then-President Donald Trump’s action was reversed when the government formally removed the Houthis as “foreign terrorist organization” and “specially designated global terrorists” three years ago.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff director stated that the majority of the American attacks on Friday occurred in sparsely inhabited regions and that the death toll would not be substantial. According to Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, the attacks struck targets, radar, and weaponry, even in isolated mountain regions.
The Houthis have been launching frequent attacks on ships in the Red Sea since October, alleging they were retaliating for Israel’s onslaught against Hamas in Gaza. They have often targeted ships that have hazy ties to Israel, endangering cargo along a vital route for exports of oil and other goods across the world.
