In recent days, Israel has announced its plan to open a new front against Hezbollah in north to reach a number of goals and prevent a number of tragic scenarios from happening.
Four main reasons for Israel to choose Hezbollah as a new target of attack include the following:
1- It’s easier for Israel to get the US agreement to join the war with Hezbollah than the Houthis:
The United States is not very inclined to launch an all-out attack against the Houthis. This is because such a move is contrary to the wishes and policies of Saudi Arabia, the regional ally of the United States. In addition, attacking Houthis also contradicts with the path that Washington has been taking in the last two years in trying to establish peace in Yemen.
Therefore, Israel knows that it is easier to get the US support to cooperate in the war with Hezbollah than to satisfy it for an all-out war against the Houthis. Although US officials have advised Israel in their speeches to refrain from creating more tensions in the region by attacking Hezbollah, most of them, including Joe Biden himself, have repeatedly stated that in the event of a war between the parties God and Israel, the US army would join the Israeli’s.
2- It’s easier to get international support due to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 against Hezbollah:
Following the second war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701 and demanded that Hezbollah disarm and move to the north side of the Litani River, 20 miles (30 km) north of the border between Lebanon and Israel. The UN, however, has not been able to implement the resolution.
Israel now believes that it should no longer tolerate such a great threat on its northern borders. Currently, hundreds of thousands of Israelis live near the Lebanese border, who are constantly afraid of Hezbollah’s attacks, and for this reason, sixty thousand Israelis have been evacuated from this area and are not willing to return to their homes despite Hezbollah’s threat. Israel now thinks it has the opportunity to end this threat once and for all and to implement the Security Council resolution itself.
3- Hezbollah has carried out wide-ranging attacks on Israel in recent weeks:
Since the beginning of the war between Hamas and Israel on October 7, Hezbollah has carried out numerous and extensive attacks against Israel. In October alone, Hezbollah forces fired more than 1,000 rockets and suicide drones towards Israel’s northern borders. In total, Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel in these three months have left ten Israelis dead and wounded, and Israel has come to the conclusion now that if it does not deal with this threat in the north of its borders, it should expect more widespread attacks in the future.
4- Hezbollah will never get along with Israel:
Hezbollah believes Israel is an occupying regime that has taken the lands of Muslims by force, an idea that even the United Nations has confirmed through countless resolutions. What makes Hezbollah a dangerous threat for Israel, in addition to occasional battles, is the explicit determination of this group to destroy Israel, which has been repeatedly expressed by Hezbollah leaders, especially Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. In one of his recent speeches, Nasrallah said that the only solution to the Palestinian issue is to destroy Israel; “The destruction of Israel is not only for the benefit of Palestine, but for the benefit of the entire Muslim world,” he said early in December.
