A fresh controversy on Kobi Shabtai, Israeli police commander, has raised the question about corruption in Israeli police structure. The media has been tough on Mr. Shabtai and his daughter who took a job for which she does not have the essential prerequisites.
Kobi Shabtai, the Israeli police commissioner, has hired his daughter to work for the force in an Arab media surveillance position. The girl is goning to do the job while lacking the knowledge of the language. The Times of Israel claims that Ya’ar Shabtai joined the police department in 2016 and has since held a number of roles. He had attained the position of inspector.
The 27-year-old was chosen as the Northern District’s spokeswoman five months ago. But he was only retained for less than 100 days before being sent to Hadera, in the Haifa District, and her previous office.
Ya’ar has a sizable social media activity, with more than 20,000 followers on Instagram. According to reports, she applied for the post through an internal tender and was selected for the position of “Officer for Digital Media Tracking in Arabic.” There were supposedly no other candidates for the role.
Given Ya’ar’s limited proficiency in Arabic, top police officers were astonished by the decision to recruit her, according to a report from a local media outlet.
Israel Police justified the hiring in an announcement provided to the station, describing Shabtai’s daughter as a crucial component of the force’s internet presence. According to the declaration “The officer was selected for the job due to her abilities and aptitude.”
A few weeks ago Shabtai himself was featured in the press concerning the police force’s failure to address the record-breaking number of killings occurring in the neighborhoods of Palestinian Israeli citizens.
Shabtai was quoted in May as stating that Arabs “murder each other” and that “it’s in their blood.” He is believed to have uttered these things in a private conversation with Itamar Ben-Gvir, the far-right minister of national security. It came after the assassination of an Israeli-born Palestinian.
A former top police officer alleged in an article published in the Times of Israel in August that Shabtai had drew a knife on him at an event of top officers and wounded his foot.
