Iran claims to have prevented 30 bombs from going off concurrently in Tehran’s city in order to cause mayhem. The 30 “terrorist explosions” were planned to occur in congested urban areas.
All were, however, thwarted, and 28 people were apprehended in relation to the planned assaults. According to an announcement from the Ministry of Intelligence that was reported by state media on Sunday, the searches were scheduled for the provinces of West Azerbaijan, Alborz, and Tehran.
That was an allusion to the nationwide turmoil and demonstrations that erupted in Iran for months starting in mid-September 2022. It all began when a girl died while being held by the police after being detained for allegedly breaking Iranian law.
“The explosions were planned with the aim of breaking the country’s security authority, creating an unstable image of the country, sowing despair and fear in the society, and instigating chaos and protests exactly during the anniversary of last year’s riots,” Ministry of Intelligence explained.
The nameless persons who were detained, according to the Intelligence Ministry, were all connected to ISIS. Several of the individuals had a record of collaborating with “takfiris in Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kurdistan region of Iraq.” A Muslim is referred to be a takfiri when they declare other Muslim people to be rebels or nonbelievers, with an associated death penalty.
The ministry continued by stating that the technical aspects of their activities demonstrated a “meaningful match with the known methods and workings” of Iran’s fiercest enemy, Israel.
The ministry reported that large amounts of explosives, electrical gadgets to explode them, 17 firearms produced in the United States and their associated ammo, communication equipment, military-grade clothes, suicide vests, and foreign currency were also seized. Two of its operatives were hurt during the operations, it was stated.
Terrorist Attacks in Holy Shrines
State media footage revealed that the targets were drone-surveilled before where they were attacked. They were taken into custody by agents of intelligence. Additionally, suspects were seen excavating up components for explosives that they had buried to conceal them.
The videos featured a group of shackled and blindfolded individuals as well as bomb vests and weapons that had been seized. 13 people were killed and several more were injured in an assault on the revered Shah Cheragh shrine in October, which had been claimed by ISIS.
Two other people were murdered in another gun assault on a sacred site in the southern city of Shiraz in last month. ISIS was also given credit for the second attack by Iran, which also said that several foreign citizens were detained for their involvement in the raid.
Two men from the nearby country of Afghanistan were found guilty of being ISIS operatives and openly executed in the beginning of June for carrying out the attack of the previous year. The gunman, identified as Rahmatollah Nowruzof from Tajikistan, received two death penalties for the August attack, Iran’s judiciary announced.
Two further individuals, who were not named, received a five-year jail term and will be expelled from the country after the term.
