A large area in southern Syria has to be fully demilitarized, according to the prime minister of Israel. Tension between Tel Aviv and the newly installed Syrian administration may increase as a result of this revelations. Following Bashar al-Assad’s overthrow in December of last year, the new administration assumed control in Syria.
Netanyahu declared that Israel will not permit Syrian soldiers to gain entry to the region south of Damascus during an address to Israeli military students. According to Netanyahu, the newly established Syrian military and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham fighters are not permitted in this part of Syria. After years of civil war, the main organization that was successful in toppling the previous Assad dictatorship was Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
According to Netanyahu, Israel demands that the southern Syrian districts of Quneitra, Deraa, and Suweida be fully demilitarized. “In addition, we will not accept any kind of danger to the Druze population in southern Syria. Furthermore, the Israeli prime minister declared that Israeli soldiers will stay on Syrian soil permanently. For security concerns, Israeli forces have occupied the area since former administration’s overthrow.
The new stance would represent a change in Israeli policy. Israel had stated that its entry into a demilitarized buffer zone under UN supervision was a short-term solution. According to Israeli officials, the action was taken to protect Israelis off the borderline with Syria. Preventing extremist organizations from relocating to the Golan in the absence of authority seemed to be the justification.
Israel and HTS
Netanyahu has stated unequivocally that he thinks the new Syrian leadership may pose a comparable threat. Following the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Israel took the majority of Golan from Syria and subsequently annexed it. While the United States recognized the act in 2019, it was not recognized globally.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syrian new temporary leader, has made an effort to convince Israel that his government doesn’t want to start a war. He appears prepared to enforce the two nations’ a decades-old disengagement pact. In 1973, following another conflict, the accord was reached. Additionally, he has made it clear that he would not permit Syria to serve as an outpost from which to launch assaults against Israel. However, Sharaa has also demanded that Israel leave the area it has seized as a buffer.
He attempts are guided by a larger plan to establish authority over Syria’s whole fragmented territory. Netanyahu obviously doesn’t believe these promises. Benjamin Netanyahu, besides much of the world society is watching to see if Sharaa lives up to his mild, conciliatory attitude both in words and deeds.
The goal of the freshly installed Syrian administration is to remove any foreign forces’ interference in the nation. Throughout the protracted civil war, these powers fought for dominance. It is believed that independence is essential to guaranteeing a better future for the nation.
For the time being, at least, certain international actors, like Russia, have seen that their once-dominant influence has diminished. The United States may also further withdraw from Syria under Donald Trump.
