Saudi Arabia has hosted discussions with the heads of state of 7 Arab nations. The purpose of the gathering is to try to come up with a strategy for Gaza’s development.
The purpose of yesterday’s meeting in Saudi capital was to react to a proposal made by the United States administration. Donald Trump has demanded that the US “take over” Gaza and evict its citizens for good. He aims to change the Palestinian city into what he described as the region’s Riviera.
Trump’s idea has been flatly dismissed by Arab nations. According to them, it disregards generations of efforts to achieve Palestinian independence. Additionally, Trump’s plan violates Gazan citizens’ rights and feeds the ongoing pattern of aggression in the Middle East. At the Arab League, they mean to offer a different strategy that has unanimous voice. Cairo, the Egyptian capital, will host the next Arab League meeting in 11 days.
The meeting that took place in Riyadh was called by Saudi Crown Prince. King Abdullah II of Jordan and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt were present. Additionally, the meeting was attended by Kuwaiti Emir, Emirati President, and Qatari Emir. The Crown Prince of Bahrain was also present at the consultative council in Riyadh.
None of the participating nations has issued an official statement on the summit following the meeting. Whether any specifics of a strategy had been settled on was not readily apparent.
Egypt Proposal
According to reports, the unveiling of Egypt’s rehabilitation plan kicked off Friday’s conference. It was intended to be a component of three separate phases of ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Thus yet, only the initial stage of that deal has been reached. There has been a break in hostilities and a trade of prisoners. The combat would completely stop in an additional phase.
Rebuilding the destroyed Palestinian territory is the focus of the last phase. Prior to the Cairo gathering, Arab rulers hope to expand on the Egyptian idea. They may present a unified front with a fresh idea that will appeal to both US and foreign parties.
The issue of the best way to finance rebuilding in an Arab strategy was still up for debate. The World Bank, and other global institutions reported previously that rebuilding Gaza would require more than $53 billion. Any strategy for rehabilitation also touches on the more broad concerns of Gaza’s governmental and safety governance.
The idea of Hamas holding onto power after the conflict has been rejected by Israeli and many of its Western backers. The PA’s seizing power over Gaza has also been refused by Israel. The worldwide society is more supportive of the organization for that prospect.
According to reporters, both Jordan and Egypt are especially in need of a deal. US president has put pressure on both nations to take in large numbers of Palestinian refugees. If they don’t cooperate, the Trump has warned to withdraw the American monetary assistance for these countries and the region.
