In an effort to enforce a strict interpretation on Afghanistan, the Taliban has prohibited women from listening to the voices of other women. The nation’s minister revealed the strange new behavioral limits for women on Monday.
Afghan human rights groups have cautioned that the Taliban’s decision may essentially forbid women from speaking to each other, despite the fact that the details are yet unknown. Even if a mature woman speaks and another one walks by, she shouldn’t pray so load that other people hear, stated Minister Khalid Hanafi.
But the main question that comes to mind is that if they aren’t even allowed to hear [each other’s] voices, how might they have a chance to sing?
He also mentioned that all of these are novel regulations and will be enforced over time, and God is going to assist us in each direction we go. The speech was sent by audio recording rather than a broadcast on TV since the Taliban has prohibited the depiction of living humans on television.
One activist said, if even the women’s voices are prohibited, how can the women who support their families purchase bread, seek medical attention, or just exist? It’s like a psychological torment for Afghan women. They can’t even literally breathe there, let alone live. Not hearing other women’s voice! It’s even unbelievable for Afghans!
Taliban’s suppressions so far
The Taliban has consistently imposed restrictions on the freedom of women in Afghanistan since seizing power in August 2021. Women have previously been told to keep their heads covered to avoid seduction and attracting other people and to avoid talking to strangers who are not their spouses or close family members.
According to regulations authorized by the Taliban’s supreme commander, Afghan women must not talk loudly at home. They also have to hide their face, head, and voice from other people. They also have to be escorted by a man of their family.
If anyone disobey the new regulations, they will be arrested and imprisoned. According to a UN study published in July 2024, the ministry responsible for encouraging morality was using its decrees and the means by which they were enforced to create an atmosphere of intimidation and dread among Afghans. To make it worse, the top leader of the Taliban has also promised to begin publicly stoning women to death.
Afghan people are waiting for being heard and receiving help from people around the world. They believe, the have been abandoned. They say Whatever is happening to them, is an outcome of Western government actions, and are being left to the Taliban.
