UNIFIL personnel in Lebanese south received the endorsement of the UN Security Council members. It happens after the UN peacekeepers team has been attacked by Israel several times in recent weeks. The members of the UNSC requests in a statement that all parties uphold the security and safety of UNIFIL troops and facilities. But Israel was not mentioned by name in the Monday statement.
The statement emphasized that attacks shouldn’t ever be directed on UN peacekeeping missionaries or UN property. They emphasized UNIFIL’s contribution to fostering regional stability by reiterating their support for it.
The remarks were made at the same time as the Israeli pm intensified his criticism of the UN forces. Benjamin Netanyahu urged them to comply with Israel’s calls and withdraw from danger for the time being.
UNIFIL has been ordered to withdraw from its bases in southern Lebanon by the Israeli administration. Israel has intensified its intensive bombardment onslaught and ground assaults. The campaign has resulted in the deaths of numerous people and the displacement of 25% of the nation’s inhabitants.
The purpose of the UNSC session was for the Security Council to come together and endorse UNIFIL in a single statement. Israeli military, according to the United Nations peacekeepers, have targeted the camps many times in the past month. Israel repeatedly attacked UNIFIL the corporate office in less than two days, resulting in injuries to two peacekeeping members.
Over the course of previous days, Israeli armor vehicles also broke past the entrances of a UNIFIL post. The assaults have been extensively denounced, notably by UN Secretary-General.
In a post on X, Antonio Guterres stated that assaults on United Nations employees were illegal under international standards. They may be considered war crimes, according to Guterres.
UNIFIL Remains in Lebanon
Despite Israeli demands to withdraw from its posts, the UN team has indicated that it will stay in its present site. “We intend to remain. A representative for the organization stated on Monday that “it is crucial to maintain an international presence and to keep the UN flag in the area because we are in the south of Lebanon pursuant to a Security Council mandate.” Approximately 10,000 forces from over 50 nations make up the UNIFIL.
The United Nations stated two days ago that 1,557 occurrences had been detected throughout the Blue Line. Ninety-three percent of the fire comes from Israel into Lebanese territories, and the line serves as a barrier between Israeli-held and Lebanese land.
There are several nations that have a sizable contingent of peacekeepers. Some number in the hundreds, and two have more than a thousand. They are thus keeping a careful eye on this since there are several nations whose people are now involved in this operation and the hazards are great.
