According to Lebanon’s prime minister, up to a million people may have already been displaced from their houses by Israel’s ongoing airstrikes. Najib Mikati considered it as the greatest migration that might have happened.
According to Lebanon’s health ministry, the attacks on Sunday claimed the lives of over fifty persons, two days after Israel assassinated Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. Hezbollah continued firing missiles into northern Israel in the meantime.
Separately, Israel announced that it had launched “large-scale” bombings against military facilities in Yemen belonging to the Houthi movement. Senior cleric Sheikh Nabil Qaouk and top military commander Ali Karaki were also murdered in Israeli airstrikes, Hezbollah said on Sunday.
The deputy commander of the administration of the Israeli military, also stated we need to continue hitting Hezbollah severely. Three members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) were murdered early on Monday by another Israeli attack in the Kola neighborhood of downtown Beirut, the group stated in a statement.
The round of airstrikes, according to Lebanon’s Prime Minister Mikati, drove thousands to evacuate from Beirut and other regions of the southern border. The community leaders are finding it difficult to assist all those in need, as the demand for hospitals and shelters increases.
What Has Happened to Lebanese in Recent Days?
A 25-year-old girl Aya Ayoub said that she and her family of six had to leave their home in the southern district of Tahweetet al-Ghadir, Beirut, since it was too hazardous for them to stay. She claimed that all the houses were entirely damaged around her home and that she was temporarily residing in a Beirut house with sixteen other people.
On October 8, 2023, the day following the historic onslaught on Israel by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip, the hitherto irregular cross-border conflict intensified when Hezbollah opened fire on Israeli positions in support of the Palestinians. Since then, tens of thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the border and hundreds of people, including many Hezbollah militants, have died.
Additionally, Israel reported on Sunday that it had attacked power stations and a port in Ras Isa and Hudaydah, Yemen, using air power. Later, footage of an enormous explosion at the port appeared. Israel claims that it attacked the locations in retaliation for recent Houthi missile assaults.
The Israeli attacks were denounced as a ruthless invasion by the Houthis, a Shia militia that rules over a sizable portion of Yemen. They vowed retaliation and said that four people had died and 33 had been wounded. Fears of a broader battle in the Middle East are growing on the world scene. Israel was cautioned by Washington not to go to war with Hezbollah because such a confrontation would prevent Israelis from being able to return to their homes in the north.
