In a devastating and deadly attack, an Israeli strike on a crowded tent camp housing Palestinians displaced by the war in Gaza killed at least 40 people and wounded 60 others early Tuesday, according to Palestinian officials. An Associated Press camera operator who visited the scene described the aftermath of the strike as “apocalyptic.” Three large craters were visible, with first responders and displaced people sifting through the sand and rubble with garden tools and their bare hands by the light of mobile phones. Body parts were pulled from the sand, including what appeared to be a human leg.

The strike on Muwasi is among the deadliest yet in the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli bombardment for weeks.
