At least 28 Pakistani national Shiite pilgrims en route to Iraq were killed in a bus crash in Iran’s central city of Yazd.

Preliminary investigation by traffic police in Yazd reveled that a technical defect in the vehicle’s braking system caused the accident.
The accident, which took place on Tuesday night, also left another 23 passengers injured, 14 of them serious, according to Mohammad Ali Malekzadeh, a local emergency official in Yazd. “There were 51 people on board at the time of the crash outside of the city of Taft, some 500 kilometers (310 miles) southeasts of the Iranian capital, Tehran” he also said.
Images of the accident scene showed the bus turned upside down on the highway with its roof smashed in and all its doors open.
Upon hearing the news, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement and while expressing deep sorrow for the accident and condolences to the families of the dead, it said those on the bus were coming from the city of Larkana in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province to Karbala.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also reacted to the tragedy and said he was “deeply saddened” by the crash and that diplomats were providing assistance to those affected. “My thoughts are with the bereaved families,” Sharif said in a post on the social platform X.
Every year, the Arbaeen pilgrimage attracts millions of people from across the world to Iraq. Last year, some 22 million pilgrims attended the commemoration in Karbala.
