As Israel has expanded its invasion of Gaza into the city of Rafah, US President Joe Biden’s full support for Israel has come under increasing criticism, with many anticipating he may even lose second term presidency for backing Tel Aviv.
US Senator Bernie Sanders said this Thursday that he is concerned President Biden’s blind and full support of Israel in its war with Hamas in Gaza may cost him losing the upcoming presidential election.
In an interview with CNN on Thursday night, Sanders noted that Biden “could lose in November, especially with young, progressive voters, and that’s what I worry about.”
“Look, I think Biden has a lot of accomplishments. And the point that I would make, and have made before, Joe Biden is not running against God. He’s not running against the perfect candidate. He’s running against the guy, named Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in the history of this country. However, how the president is handling the war between Israel and Hamas could be enough to cost him the elections,” Sanders said.
The 83 years old Sanders is the longest-serving independent in US congressional history but has a close relationship with the Democratic Party, having caucused with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career and sought the party’s presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, coming second in both campaigns.
Sanders has also been an all-time critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and has rebuked the Biden administration for sending aids to Israel in the wake of the climbing death toll in Gaza.
Too late for Biden to make up for his mistakes!
In an effort to make up for his mistakes since October 7 in blindly supporting Israel, Biden warned this past Wednesday that he would halt supplying Israel with offensive weapons should Israeli forces launch an invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
But the fact is that the White House had repeatedly warned against a full-scale invasion of Rafah, where more than 1 million civilians are seeking refuge, yet Israel has preferred to ignore the calls and is now having thousands f troops on the ground in Rafah.
But getting blames from an independent like Sanders is only one little part of the sad story for Biden. To read between the lines, the Democratic president is now taking heat from all sides as both Republicans and Democrats are unhappy with his approach to the Gaza conflict.
Likewise, American people are also increasingly disagreeing Biden’s way of handling the Gaza war. Recent polls in this regard show that most voters say they trust Donald Trump to do a better job in the same tough situation tan Biden.
According to one poll carried out by the ABC News Ipsos, nearly four in 10 Americans say the United States is doing too much to support Israel in its war with Hamas, up from about three in 10 in January. And more trust former President Donald Trump than President Joe Biden to handle the issue, though few call it critical in their choice of a candidate. About a third of Americans also say their country is doing too little to help protect Palestinian civilians caught up in the unjust war with Israel.
