A milestone investment for Iraq’s health sector now has the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) building a sophisticated medical city in the Dhi Qar Governorate of southern Iraq. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani led the Council of Ministers through a decision which demonstrates the government’s dedication to extending quality healthcare services across Iraq’s provinces.
The Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund Committee recommended this initiative which continues to drive the active implementation of essential infrastructure renewal projects across the region. The new medical city aligns with a national hospital construction plan unveiled last year which seeks to solve Iraq’s longstanding health sector obstacles.
Similar to Baghdad Medical City established in 1973 the Dhi Qar Medical City project maintains its ambitious design specifications. Several teaching hospitals belonging to Baghdad Medical City have functioned as Iraq’s vital healthcare system foundation since 1973. Medical services remain inadequate throughout Dhi Qar province because of years of war and low investments.
Proponent Governor Hadi Al-Ghazi announced the project originally during April 2022. According to Hadi Al-Ghazi the new health facility aimed to address the province’s “health services crisis.” According to Al-Ghazi, the new medical city will be developed in three phases over the course of three years, with the ultimate goal of providing modern, comprehensive healthcare to residents across the governorate’s administrative units.
“The medical city project is one of the largest strategic projects implemented in the province,” Al-Ghazi said. “Hopefully to drive health up-up, which had faded into severe disarray over past decades.”
The involvement of Cscec, one of the biggest construction companies in the world, shows the scale and ambition of the project. It is expected that the Chinese company will contribute advanced technologies and expertise due to its experience with plenty of large infrastructures, and thus ensure timely project completion.
