Masdar which is renewable energy company wholly owned by the state of UAE, is making history producing one gigawatt of green uninterrupted power from a game-changing facility. That historical announcement was made yesterday Tuesday the chairman of the firm-Sultan Al Jaber- at the starting point of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The converging event that has attracted all public discussion about sustainability and energy in itself heralds a major watershed moment for renewable energy in the Middle East.
Al Jaber, who has a number of major jobs, among them chief executive of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and UAE’s minister of industry and advanced technology, elaborated on why this development was important. Such announcement positions this development as a breakthrough to make renewable energy a very reliable, baseload power. “This will for the very first time make renewable energy into baseload energy. It is a first step that could become a giant leap,” Al Jaber said. He further indicated what this could mean using his inspiring tone.
Baseload power generally means that power is supplied by fossil fuel: its consistent supply will satisfy the minimum demand and thus, power up industries or the whole communities without any renaissance. So Al Jaber implies that this new plant may challenge such an institution and give persistent energy from renewable sources. His poetic utterance- “How can we power a world that never sleeps with energy sources that do?”- is poignantly bearing up the intrinsic nature of the challenge and highlighting the project’s novelty.
Al Jaber continued stressing on the importance of diversified energy mix pointing to the fact that, with progress in artificial intelligence, energy consumption is growing at a very fast rate. He especially mentioned that there is a significant rise with the advent of the various applications as the ChatGPT to 250 percent rise in power demand by the year 2050. This increase can catalyze global energy demands to an astounding 35,000MW, adding more pressure on the need for more sustainable energy.
The new-facility for generating green energy without interruption is already in the right position to meet these needs. Through the integration of renewable forms of electricity into base load suppliers, the plant eliminates a key limitation in the expansion of clean energy; reliability. The development indicates an innovations direction that may help in creating additional such advancements in the future worldwide.
This orifice is in line with the UAE’s ambitious and laudable goals towards sustainability and the diversification of its energy sources. The nation has remained committed to dedicating a high proportion of its investments into renewable energy in a bid to wean itself off the oil nipple even as it seeks a place among the top power players in the energy market. In this regard, efforts such as in the new facility in Masdar are strategic as they hold the potential of revolutionizing the energy markets both locally and globally.
The opening of the facility is set to capture the interest of stake holders including environmental conscious organizations, investors in clean energy among others. Besides, it could motivate other countries to implement similar programs to encourage formation of clean energy companies in the region, thereby creating a domino effect for formation of other companies in the Middle East.
Therefore, the beginning of an innovative renewable energy plant of Masdar is a milestone in the first chapter of renewable energy architecture in the global level, a triumph for a UAE itself. Sultan Al Jaber vision and effort with the help of United Arab Emirates government to shift the energy dialogue towards sustainable and innovative solutions is a positive signal to the whole world. Masdar would like to see this contribution as the start of a continuous provision of RE sources and the world waits and watches as this takes shape.
