According to an insider who spoke to media, the United States was willing to swap a prisoner from Guantanamo Bay for a return of three American nationals who were detained in Afghanistan. Over a while, Washington and the Taliban have been negotiating a compromise. Three years earlier, Mahmoud Habibi, George Glezmann, and Ryan Corbett were arrested in Afghan territories. Habibi’s detention has not been confirmed by the Taliban authorities.
Muhammad Rahim al Afghani was offered by the United States in exchange for the three American Hostages. Osama bin Laden supposedly had al Afghani as a close acquaintance. Rahim and two other individuals were requested by the Taliban in retribution.
In recent weeks, the chief U.S. captive envoy, Roger Carstens, was in Qatar’s capital. Yet another source claims that he made the Taliban a fresh and “important” offer. Officials avoided elaborating on their latest proposal.
American nationals who have been mistakenly incarcerated overseas have been successfully released under the Biden administration. The latest cases came back home from Russia and China. Yet, political obstacles are bound to arise in attempting to repatriate American troops from Afghanistan. The catastrophic American pullout from Afghanistan four years ago, which let the Taliban to seize dominance, exacerbates the condition.
The specifics of the proposals were not confirmed by a US National Security Council representative. The Wall Street Journal was the initial newspaper to report about them.
Nonetheless, they stated that the government is making every effort to guarantee the release of all the three hostages in Afghanistan. Furthermore, they praised the Joe Biden administration’s achievements in negotiating the freedom of Americans detained overseas. “President Biden and his team continue to work, often in partnership with key allies, to negotiate for the release of Americans held hostage or unjustly detained abroad.”
The Taliban rulers are not recognized by the administration of President Biden as the legitimate Afghan authority. But Washington has met with its members in Qatar to talk about things like human rights and the United States citizens who are being held.
According to a State Department spokesman, Washington is extremely worried about the welfare of its citizens who have been wrongfully imprisoned in Afghanistan. According to statements made in August of last year, Washington will lift their arrests in every interaction they’ve had with the Taliban. “As we strive to secure their release, the United States will continue to place a high priority on bringing them home.”
The US State Department has ruled that both Glezmann and Corbett were illegally imprisoned. The FBI requested details regarding Habibi five months ago.
