In another bleak day in the besieged Gaza Strip, at least 27 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, while rescue teams pursued the search for 14 others believed to be under the rubbles. The attacks targeted several locations in Gaza City and Khan Younis, leaving families shattered and communities mourning.
Huge blasts shook eastern Gaza City’s Shujaiya neighborhood at dawn as warplanes targeted one of its residential buildings, shattering the morning silence as medics toiling at the scene reported 11 Palestinians died in the single strike, with several more wounded.
In Khan Younis, the horror unfolded as the Civil Defense recovered six bodies from a civilian vehicle that was targeted by an Israeli strike in the eastern area of Satar. The vehicle was destroyed, and another tragedy had struck in this ongoing conflict that has devastated countless families.
The Shubaki family lost to a direct hit to their home, living in western Gaza City, became one of the most heartbreaking losses of the day: a husband, a wife, and an unborn child-three generations taken away in an instant. Herein told is their story, repeated in so many, many families by the unrelenting bombardment.
In the Intelligence Towers area of northwestern Gaza City, another life was claimed when air strikes hit the vicinity, according to local medical sources. Meanwhile, rescue teams achieved a small victory by pulling two injured survivors from the ruins of the Ghoula family home in Shujaiya. Hope and sorrow coexist, though, as 11 more people are still buried beneath the steel and concrete, their fate unknown.
Three people, including an innocent kid, were killed in an explosion that targeted the houses of the Sharif and Mujayda families in the Mawasi neighborhood of Khan Younis. Ten others were wounded in the same attack, adding to the growing number of casualties. In Rafah’s northern district, two more Palestinians perished in a separate strike, while another victim succumbed to earlier injuries in central Khan Younis.
Renewed Shelling
The Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza faced renewed shelling as Israeli forces continued their systematic destruction of structures in Beit Hanoun and the Jabalia refugee camp. These actions against medical facilities and civilian infrastructure have raised serious concerns about violations of international humanitarian law.
The toll of this conflict, which began in October 2023, has reached staggering proportions, with over 45,600 Palestinians killed, predominantly women and children. This is on despite of international pressures for non-violence; in fact, the UN Security Council has passed a resolution requiring a halt of fighting immediately.
It didn’t take long for the international legal community to sit up and take notice. The International Justice system has threatened to arrest the incumbent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Besides that, Israel can be tried at the International Court of Justice over genocide charges connected with the military operations in the Gaza Strip.
During the night in Gaza, rescue teams are still sifting through the wreckage in their desperate search for the living and the dead and relatives bury their dead or wait in anguish for missing loved ones. The humanitarian situation becomes worse and worse each day with dire consequences to the history and populace of region.
