Doha has emphasized the significance to provide Syria’s humanitarian crisis first priority. Following the overthrow of the Bashar Al-Assad government, Qatar also demanded that global sanctions be lifted on the country in question.
The spokesman for Qatar’s foreign office said that because the reason behind the embargo has been removed, they must be lifted immediately. Majed Al-Ansari believes that the atrocities committed by the previous administration were the reason for these measures. Al-Ansari made these comments when a prominent Qatari team visited Syria on Monday. Mohammed Al-Khulaifi, Minister of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed the meeting. He visited Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the de facto leader of Syrian nation.
Shortly after the overthrow of the Assad government on December 8, a high-profile meeting took place. The team from Qatar had taken the airline’s first trip to Damascus International Airport in thirteen years. In reaction to the Assad government’s violent suppression of nonviolent demonstrators, Doha broke off relations with it.
Early in 2010s, Doha shut down its embassy in Damascus. Additionally, it was the initial country to open a Syrian opposition political representation in Doha. It remained steadfast in its opposition to the Assad government.
Severe global sanctions, including those imposed by the US and the European Union, have been placed on Syria following the outbreak of civil wat. The country was plunged into an insurrection as a result of Assad’s conducts, which prompted restrictions.
Earlier, a Qatari source had stated that the group visiting Damascus was joined by an expert aviation crew from Qatar.
The group traveled to Damascus in order to evaluate Damascus Airport’s preparedness for reopening. Al-Ansari, who spoke at a media conference, clarified that the group talked about how Doha can help to ensure that airport services resume.
Qatar’s Political Embargo
In the meantime, on December 12, Doha opened an emergency air corridor to deliver vital aid to Syrian people. Supplies were made via Jordan’s Marka military airport, Lebanon’s Rafic Hariri International Airport, and Gaziantep in Turkey.
According to Al-Ansari, the focus is on pressing necessities in order to guarantee a smooth and effective handover procedure.
The worst refugee catastrophe in history was brought on by the former Syrian administration. Fearing violence and the danger of ISIS, almost 14 million people were compelled to leave the nation.
Al-Ansari asserted that “the symbolic message associated with the landing of the Qatar Airways plane in Damascus International Airport reflects the State of Qatar’s commitment to taking all essential measures to ensure the airport’s recommissioning and resuming flights to the sisterly Syrian Arab Republic.”
The Syrian Network for Human Rights reports that during the thirteen years ending in 20244, the Syrian government imprisoned at least 157,000 individuals. A total of 112,713 people—including 6,698 women and 1,305 children—were also missing.
Doha was one of 83 states who supported a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly last year. The resolution demanded the establishment of an impartial organization to look into the whereabouts of the tens of thousands of persons who are still unaccounted for in Syrian soils.
