Israel has been held accountable by the relatives of an American lady who was shot and died during a demonstration in the West Bank. They stated in an announcement that an inquiry headed by Israel would be insufficient and demanded an impartial probe.
According to two sources, Israeli troops opened fire on Aysenur Eygi’s head in retaliation for her demonstration outside of Nablus. They said that the woman had been taking part in an on-going demonstration against Israel’s construction of new settlements close to the Palestinian hamlet of Beita.
According to an autopsy performed at Al Najah University, Eygi was murdered by a gunshot to the head fired by an Israeli gun, as stated by Nablus Governor.
A representative for the US National Security Council stated that the Washington has been in touch with Israeli authorities to call for a probe into the incident after the Israeli army had already acknowledged shooting at the protesters. However, the family expressed that it would not be sufficient.
The family expressed their gratitude for the White House’s sympathy message, but stated that an Israeli probe is insufficient considering the circumstances surrounding Aysenur’s death. “We demand that Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris order an independent investigation into the wrongful death of a US citizen and guarantee full accountability for the guilty parties.”
The announcement said that Eygi died from a gunshot that seemed to have been fired by an Israeli security gunman. Eygi was a citizen of the United States and Turkey. The Turkish administration has stated that it believes Israel is to blame for the woman’s death, and US investigators are investigating into the tragic situation. At a gathering in Istanbul, Turkish President declared that Israel had “heinously killed our young girl.”
Eygi Worked a Volunteer
This April, Eygi received his degree from the University of Washington. She had volunteered for the same pro-Palestinian activist organization as Rachel Corrie, the International Solidarity Movement. While attempting to stop an Israeli vehicle from demolishing Palestinian houses in Gazatwo decades ago, Corrie, an American citizen, was murdered.
The Israel Defense military issued a statement in which they claimed that their soldiers had fired back at a primary agitator of the violence who had been throwing rocks at the military.
According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the US was gathering information about Eygi’s death. While expressing his sympathies to her family, he refrained from proposing any prompt policy modifications in light of her passing.
There have been rulings that Israeli soldiers were involved for the murders of American citizens in the West Bank. On the other hand, the United States has not changed its policy and has kept up a substantial military presence for those troops.
Sean Savett, a spokesman for the National Security Council, had earlier stated that the US was extremely upset by Eygi’s death. “We have made contact with the Israeli government in order to obtain additional details and to request an inquiry into the incident,” he continued.
