According to a top United Nations source, Israeli recent demands for the displacement from Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza have caused the organization to suspend its relief efforts in the region. Talking At the United Nations headquarters, a spokesperson briefed reporters, saying: “Under the current circumstances, we are unable to deliver today.”
The United Nations has moved its primary control operations for the territory known as Gaza and the majority of its staff to Deir el-Balah, the official said. It occurred after Rafah in southern regions had been directed to be evacuated by Israel three months earlier. “We’re not leaving [Gaza] because the people need us there. We’re trying to balance the need of the population with the need for safety and security of the UN personnel.”
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric stressed during the formal briefing that UNRWA has the capacity to keep operating since it is integrated into the community. The government source is describing a problem with assistance transfers across the Palestinian territory. “We are discussing the integration of UNRWA into various locations,” Dujarric stated. Thus, they will assist and distribute if they are present and competent to do so. However, other UN organizations are unable to transfer individuals from a location to another.
UNRWA Challenges
The UN is facing extreme difficulties due to the Israeli military’s frequent orders to evacuate downtown in Gaza, which are upsetting UN basic efforts. Previously deemed to be secure, the Israeli army announced its most recent evacuation instructions for Deir el-Balah two days ago. It has acknowledged that it is extending its ground attack into the Deir el-Balah suburbs. Palestinians are ordered to leave their houses and places of shelter, and they have no idea when or if they will be allowed to be back.
The World Food Programme of the United Nations warned that the growing Israeli orders to evacuate have been becoming more disruptive to its supply centers and communal kitchens in the city. UNRWA’s senior field director, Sam Rose, stated that the agency was still able to provide medical and other amenities. Even while UNRWA operates differently, he pointed out that it still confronted similar difficulties. “We are being squeezed into ever smaller areas of Gaza.”
As relief laborers, UN personnel have received no safeguards at all. They were forced to carry on with their business because of this. Foreign experts and human rights organizations have denounced the evacuation orders and the ensuing widespread suffering.
Israel has frequently assaulted Palestinians both on the way to these so-called safe zones and once they get there.
