Instead of seeking to reach a fresh and a new truce deal for Gaza, Hamas has urged negotiators to provide a proposal based on the previous truce deal. The organization stated that it is seeking a strategy centered on Joe Biden’s May 31 truce suggestion, which was laid out by mediators Qatar and Egypt on May 6, and UN Security Council Resolution 2735.
Guaranteeing the release of Israeli prisoners in Gaza and an indeterminate number of Palestinians detained in Israeli jails, the May 6 proposal was rejected by Israel but was accepted by Hamas.
In an statement on Sunday Hamas declared that instead of seeking additional rounds of discussions or fresh proposals that would offer protect occupation’s violence and provide it more time to carry out its massacre against the people of Palestine, mediators ought to impose this [May 6 proposal] on Israel. On the other hand, Israeli media organizations are reading the Hamas declaration as an outright denial of the ceasefire negotiations.
Representatives of the US, Egypt, and Qatar has recently urged Israel and Hamas to negotiate a truce in Gaza and an agreement for the release of prisoners, and they suggested that they do so on August 15 in Cairo or Doha. The senior leadership of Hamas is reportedly, “studying the invitation for these ceasefire talks”, stated by their spokesman on Saturday.
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, has already declared that he wasn’t going to endorse any agreement that wants to end Israel’s attack on Gaza without destroying Hamas. However, Israel has declared that it will send mediators to the August 15 cease-fire meeting.
If the negotiations take place, this will also be the first time that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Gaza, is leading Hamas into negotiations after Israel killed Ismail Haniyeh. Clearly, Israel’s attacks on Gaza are still going strong in the interim.
Recently between Israel and Gaza
About a hundred individuals were killed on Saturday by an Israeli airstrike on the al-Tabin School in Gaza, which houses Palestinian families who have been forced to flee.
But apparently, whenever there is any progress in negotiations, there is a major attack in Gaza, which completely shatters the talks. According to Hamas, Israel’s execution of the al-Tabin school tragedy is more evidence that it only intends to intensify its hostility. However, the organization also stated that, in spite of this attack, it will stick to the mediators’ suggestion, which it had already accepted.
