The Israeli prime minister is believed to have decided against moving on with attempts to establish a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia. The endeavor is postponed until later in 2024, when the winner in the US election is announced in November.
As per a report published by the Israeli media, Benjamin Netanyahu has chosen to delay his plans to forge diplomatic ties with Riyadh because of the swift changes occurring in American administrative policies. The strategy was prompted by Joe Biden’s decision to walk away from his presidential run and the growing possibility that former president Donald Trump would be reelected in three months.
According to reports, Netanyahu believes it might be wise to hold off on making a decision until the conclusion of the American election campaign to determine if GOP contender Donald Trump wins reelection. Under US intervention, the Israeli people would then seem to have a clearer idea of how to proceed with the long-awaited normalization agreement with rulers in Riyadh.
Netanyahu reportedly made his choice as the US Congress was wrapping up the summer term in advance of and in the run-up to the November vote. It appears that the condition lends the delay additional significance. Nevertheless, it also occurs within a few days after an Israeli source told media during a press conference in the United States that a normalization deal between Saudi Kingdom and Israeli administration might still be reached prior to the decisive November vote.
US Concerns
At the negotiation in Washington, Netanyahu and Joe Biden had also talked about the matter. An Israeli media reported that an anonymous Palestinian authority notified last week that, should the normalization attempts be delayed till after the presidential election in the US, the Saudi authorities will make a plan to work with Palestinian Authority to collaborate on their strategies to Washington and its incoming team in the White House.
Washington is concerned that if a possible normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia included stopping the conflict in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister could be inclined to undermine the entire bid. Israeli policy may be further impacted by a commitment to strive for a two-state resolution to the long-running Israeli-Palestinian dispute.
“There’s an opportunity for Israel to become integrated in the region, to get the fundamental security it needs and wants, to have the relationships it’s wanted since its founding,” US Secretary of State stated before the Senate’s foreign relations committee on Tuesday. “The Saudis have made it apparent that both a legitimate road to a Palestinian state and peace in Gaza are necessary for this.”
The administration of Joe Biden has been developing a strategy for Riyadh to normalize ties with Israel for a while. Saudi Arabia would get support in creating a civilian atomic development and an official defense alliance from the US in exchange.
Theoretically, Israel’s normalization of relations with the Saudi monarchy may lead to the Islamic community’s recognition of the Jewish nation. The United States has demanded that a solution include the conclusion of the combat from the start of the current battle in Gaza. An additional need was Israeli approval of a new system of governance in the strip incorporating the Palestinian Authority, which is located in the West Bank.
