According to the UN envoy for Yemen, recent events in Israel, the Red Sea, and within the nation demonstrate the genuine threat of a catastrophic escalation the entire area. During a report on Yemeni crisis to the Security Council, Hans Grundberg cautioned about the risk of radicalization in the wake of fresh Houthi assaults on cargo ships.
Conflict increased following newly verified Israeli attacks on Yemen ports were carried out in reprisal for Houthi assaults on Israeli capital. Grundberg stated that he is still extremely worried about the ongoing attacks on global commerce in the Red Sea and the adjacent waters. Grundberg further noted that “recent developments suggest that the threat against international shipping is increasing in scope and precision.”
According to the UN envoy, a fresh and deadly form of aggression has emerged as a result of the Houthi assaults on Israeli capital and the responding raids on the Yemeni Hodeidah port, as well as its petroleum and electricity installations.
People have perished and commerce has been disrupted by the sinking and destruction of trade cargos. The staff of the Galaxy Leader, a freighter that the Houthis took over in 9 months ago, are still being held captive. Attacks against military installations in Yemeni regions under Houthi authority are still being conducted by the Washington and London.
According to Grundberg, it is concerning that no indications of a mediation or mitigation are in sight, much less a resolution. In reaction to Israel’s attack on Gaza, the Houthis fired missiles and drones against Israel and caused disruptions to international traffic across the Red Sea.
Since the start of the conflict, Israel has claimed that the Houthi forces, who support Iran, have carried out 200 strikes on the country, majority of which were foiled.
Exceptional Attack Changes the Developments
An exceptional Houthi drone attack on Israeli capital last week resulted in one fatality and forced Israel to declare its first-ever attacks against the militia a day later. Six persons were killed by the raids near Hodeidah port, according to local medical personnel. Israel claimed to have shot intercepted a Houthi rocket late last week.
The confrontations between Houthi forces and Israel broke out few weeks after Israel started a deadly campaign on Gaza following Hamas attacks on November 7 last year. Houthis have insisted since then that the attacks against cargo ships and Israeli assets will continue until the bloodshed stops in Gaza. The group claims that all the ships targeted in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Eden have had a direct or indirect relationship to Israel.
