While several EU countries have shown unprecedented support for Palestine in its unjust war with Israel, the US former and current officials still spare no effort to support Israel’s merciless war machine.
US former president Donald Trump said during a speech among his supporters this Wednesday that if he is re-elected, he will “crush” the pro-Palestinian student movement across the country.
He also said he would “deport” foreign students protesting the Gaza genocide and vowed to “defeat” the demonstrators, who he said were part of a “radical revolution” across American universities.
The former US president also promised that “If you re-elect me, we’re going to set this movement back to 25 or 30 years ago.”
Praising the US police for its brutal crackdown on pro-Palestinian students at Columbia University late last month, Trump asserted that he supports Israel’s right to continue what he described as its “war on terror.”
The Biden administration, no better than Trump’s!
Just like the US former president, the current administration in Washington has also been fully behind Israel even despite continuing the bloodshed in Rafah.
A spokesman for the US White House announced this Thursday that the Israeli attack that killed dozens of Palestinians in Rafah, has not yet gone so far to cross a red line that will lead to a change in US policies towards Israel.
“Israel’s actions so far do not constitute a major ground operation that President Biden has set as a red line for Washington’s ongoing aid to Tel Aviv,” National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said, adding that “we have not seen them do that at this point, but we’re watching it very closely. Everything we’re seeing, and we can’t see everything, but everything that we can see tells us that they are not moving in in a major ground operation in population centers in the center of Rafah.”
In addition, several White House officials have also described the published images of Rafah as “heartbreaking”, “tragic” and “terrible” in press conferences in the past few days, but none of them indicated an imminent change in US policy towards Israel. Earlier this May, US President Joe Biden announced that if Israel attacks Rafah, the United States will stop supplying Israel with offensive weapons such as bombs and artillery shells.
Europe has begun shifting policies towards Israel-Palestine issue
Contrary to US stance on the Israel-Palestine issue, EU countries have begun both in words and actions to show support for Palestine and rebuke Israel for committing war crimes in Gaza.
Ireland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Michelle Martin, for example, announced this Thursday that EU foreign ministers have had an important discussion for the first time about imposing sanctions on Israel if Israel does not adhere to international humanitarian law in the Gaza war.
Martin told reporters at the European Union Foreign Relations Council meeting on Thursday that “the Irish government proposed that in case Israel’s brutal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza continues, the European Union will start imposing sanctions against Israel.”
This action comes after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled on Friday that Israel must stop its attack on Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, and close the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to the area, a demand that Israel has not reacted to yet.
In line with this pro-Palestinian wave formed in Europe, it was this Tuesday that Ireland, Norway and Spain officially announced they will henceforth recognize Palestine as an independent state.
