While pro-Palestinian protests in US universities were violently suppressed by US police, a letter by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei this Thursday addressing the movement could revive the protests.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wrote a letter this Thursday, addressing the young students in the United States and praising them for their pro-Gaza protests they sparked across the country.
Media across the world published Khamenei’s letter
Khamenei’s letter to US students was big news as immediately after the letter went viral on Khamenei’s personal website, Khamenei.ir, several news websites across the world highlighted it and published all or parts of the letter. Fox News, News Week, The Sun, Daily Messenger, Hindustan Times, and a number of Arabian news websites including Al-Mayadin, Al-Manar, Al-Arabyia, and Arab News also published Khamenei’s letter to US students.
In response to Israel’s offensive on Gaza that began on October 7 and still continues, pro-Palestine protests erupted in college campuses across the US, leading to thousands of students and university professors being arrested.
What in the letter is so important?
Khamenei’s letter to American students who support Palestine is of great significance. It is important especially because at this very critical time, the world is getting more and more united than ever in realizing that Israel is committing war crimes in Palestine, and that siding with Palestinians means standing on the right side of the history.
Just to give an example of this realization, it was this Tuesday that three European countries, including Spain, Ireland and Norway, formally announced that they recognized Palestinian statehood, cementing a joint move that further isolates Israel over its war against Hamas in Gaza.
Furthermore, Ireland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Michelle Martin announced this Wednesday that the EU foreign ministers have had an important discussion for the first time about imposing sanctions on Israel if it continues to disregard international humanitarian law in the Gaza war.
“The Irish government proposed that if Israel’s brutal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza continues, the European Union will start imposing sanctions against Israel,” Martin told reporters Wednesday.
A few days ago on Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) also ruled that Israel must stop its attack on Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, and close the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to this area, a demand that Israel has not paid attention yet.
Khamenei’s words can have huge effects!
Considering all the above-mentioned developments in recent days, Khamenei’s letter at this time is significant and can have huge effects. This is true because as these pro-Palestinian move are taking place in Europe, his words can ignite a new wave of protests across US universities and revive the spirit of young American students who stood for Palestine.
This can in turn change the pro-Israeli attitude of most US policy makers who have spared no effort in supporting Israel’s war crimes in Gaza since October 7.
