Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was traveling in a convoy of three helicopters when one of them got stuck by the bad weather, Iranian state TV said. Further details confirm that the crashed helicopter that had to have a hard landing carried Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi, while the two others landed safely.
According to state TV, the region’s bad weather had made it difficult for rescue teams to get to the spot. Reports of storm, fog, and heavy rain has been verified by local authorities. Other reports about the potential death or injury if the Iranian president or other passengers at the helicopter has been rejected as false media coverage.
Raisi was going through the region of East Azerbaijan in Iran. According to State TV, the event occurred close to Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan, around 375 miles away from the Iranian capital.
In the early hours of Sunday, Raisi visited Azerbaijan to officially open a dam along with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
