American authorities have admitted that efforts to establish formal ties between Israel and Arab nations are not a replacement for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Washington hasn’t done anything to rekindle hopes for the creation of a Palestinian country in the Middle East.
Furthermore, the Netanyahu government’s brutality against Palestinian people has not been held responsible by the Biden government. Against US policy, Israel has continued settlement construction and expansion in the West Bank. Tel Aviv receives $3.8 billion in annual subsidies from US government.
At the UN General Assembly gathering in September, Israeli prime minister rejected the notion that normalizing ties with Israel’s Arab neighbors should be contingent on making peace with the Palestinian leaders. Netanyahu said that Tel Aviv shouldn’t grant the Palestinians the right to veto over future peace agreements with Arab nations.
Israeli PM also displayed a map of the area that included Israel’s Golan Heights and the Palestinian Lands. Palestinian rights activists were alarmed by the move and were concerned that their worries would be disregarded amid discussions of normalization.
“I think what’s happened Saturday and what’s continuing to unfold is a clear reminder that the Middle East cannot forget about the Palestinian situation that, left unresolved, will continue to stand in the way of a wider regional peace. And the US has to reckon with that now,” a human rights activist believes.
It doesn’t seem like the latest eruption of hostility has caused the US to reevaluate its approach toward Israel thus far. Few days after the outset of war, Biden described the strike by Hamas as a “terrorist” assault meant to kill Jews. However, he omitted to address the Palestinian conflict. He also contrasted ISIS to Hamas.
Peaceful Middle East; Maybe Another Time
Hamas authorities have attributed the incident on Israeli abuses, especially Israeli soldiers’ raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque. “Like every nation in the world, Israel has the right to respond, indeed has a duty to respond to these vicious attacks,” Biden claimed in his comments vowing to back Israel’s hostile efforts in Gaza.
The Israeli-Palestinian issue, however, cannot be ignored in regional strategies, according to a chief executive officer of the Arab Center Washington, DC. This is demonstrated by the huge magnitude of hostilities.
Building a new Middle East that suits primarily Israel’s economic objectives is equivalent to building a new map for the Middle East without Palestine. The current scenario wants to send this message to Washington, Tel Aviv and other Arab nations waiting to join the normalization process.
The Palestinians don’t seem to consent to that, will not vanish, and won’t embrace the scraps that come off the table of such events. Any resolution out of the current crisis must first consider the consent of Palestinians as the true owners of the land before proceeding with involving other nations.
Washington’s miscalculation on the issue has led to the death of about two thousand in less than a week in a war which seems to be lingering on for much more weeks to come. Washington’s failure in considering the public will in policymaking processes involves not only the local issues, but also the international affairs.
