A 15-year-old girl was discovered dead on her roof, shot numerous times, not long after Israeli forces raided the city of Jenin on Sunday.
Palestinian teenager Jana Majdi Zakarneh, 15, was shot multiple times, twice in the face, while playing with her cat on the roof that Sunday evening while wearing her pajamas.
The grief over Jana’s passing is still evident in Jenin City the day after her murder. In somber silence, mourners sat on plastic chairs outside her funeral service.
What did this child do to deserve to be shot in such a way? yelled her aunt Hanan Said Zakarneh.
She asked, fighting back tears, “What was her crime?”.
“She wasn’t old. Hanan explained that because both of Jana’s parents have disabilities and need full-time care and support, Jana spends almost all of her time with them and doesn’t frequently leave the house.
They were taken care of by Jana, who would turn 16 at the end of this month.
Hanan said, “My sister only had a boy who is still young and her daughter, who is now a martyr.
The Raid
Conflicts between armed Palestinian fighters and Israeli soldiers erupted soon after the raid on the neighborhood of al-Bayadir began. Three Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces after they searched several local homes.
According to Saleem al-Subar, a local activist in Jenin, fighting between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces grew more intense following the arrests.
Subar stated that “the soldiers attacked while civilians, including families with children, were still in the streets.”
People were perplexed and unsure of what to do as we suddenly began to hear shootings occurring everywhere. Since they couldn’t tell from where the soldiers were firing, they started to flee and hide. ”
Majid informed reporters that one of the men Israeli forces detained had bullet casings discovered in a neighboring house. He thinks that this is the residence where Jana was sniper-shot.
On Monday afternoon, the Israeli military issued a statement claiming, “Following a preliminary investigation, it was found that there is indeed a high probability that the girl who was killed was hit by an accidental shot fired at armed men on a roof in the area, from which shots were fired at the forces.
In the meantime, the Israeli army issued the following statement: “The IDF and its commanders regret any harm to uninvolved civilians, including those who are in a combat environment and in close proximity to armed terrorists during exchanges of fire. “.
Residents of Jenin and the rest of the occupied West Bank have nonetheless stated that they do not feel safe.
“It is unsafe to hide inside your own home, even if you do. Jana was killed while she was at home, as you can see. Thus, even those who flee are uncertain of their chances of survival, according to Subar.
“Why don’t they defend us? Where is the world? Where are people supposed to go if they don’t feel safe even in their own homes?”
